Introduction to the Singapore fishes above water blog!

Ever seen or photographed a fish and wondered what it was, but just couldn’t seem to connect the dots? That’s why we created this blog—to help nature-goers like yourself identify fishes from the perspective you’re most likely to see them: from above the water!

Many people visit Singapore’s parks and nature reserves daily in search of biodiversity, yet a wide variety of fishes are often overlooked. Despite occasionally catching the eye, they tend to be underappreciated, whether due to the difficulty of photographing them, a lack of interest, or the assumption that fish photography requires going underwater or fishing. While diving or fishing is definitely necessary for a lot of fishes, there is also good amount of them that can be seen from land here!

With the help of our phones, cameras, fishing rods, and iNaturalist, this blog aims to showcase these underappreciated aquatic animals in their natural habitats through the eyes of a hobbyist nature photographer. More importantly, we hope to inspire greater appreciation for them as you explore Singapore’s diverse habitats, from freshwater streams and mangrove swamps to coastal waters.

While this simple blog won’t be an exhaustive list of all the fishes and their information found here—native or not—we’ll continue expanding our collection and providing write-ups and references for each species we feature. We hope this space feeds your curiosity and deepens your connection with Singapore’s rich aquatic life!
